What Is on Your Plate Today?

We become what we take in. In order to better understand we need to connect the dots to see the whole picture behind the con, not the isolated press releases to victimize all supplements while protecting the toxicity of our food, the absolute junk represented as supplements and our toxic environment. You can not stand in manure up to your knees and then question if your deodorant is working. If you allow your children to eat toxic food filed with sugar, chemicals and food dyes, permit eight hours of screen time (or more), and eat toxic gummies presented as vitamins, lots can be done. If your children are not getting their 9 hours of sleep per night and some outdoor activity during the day, something’s got to give to see improvements. You cannot assume that it is alright to take your kid with attention and behavioral problems to KFC or McDonalds just because you give plant-based yoghurt for breakfast, it is not an offset, even if you convince yourself that you are providing a “healthy” meal.
When you read headlines stating that 1 in 3 children face chronic health conditions and are overweight or living with obesity, or that ultra-processed food is linked to smaller key brain regions, and that thousands of children are hospitalized for vitamin or mineral toxicity, it becomes obvious that it is largely influenced by lifestyle choices caused by what you take in and how you live. I certainly understand this is a harsh reality but we need a positive change.
Quality of diet really influences brain development from early childhood, and not just according to a new study[1]. “Researchers at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles tracked 144 Latino children from infancy through age 6, measuring their ultra-processed food (UPF) intake at 6, 12, 24, and 72 months and scanning their brains with an MRI at age 6. They found that every 10 percent increase in cumulative UPF consumption was associated with a nearly 2 percent decrease in the size of subcortical brain regions, including the amygdala and thalamus, which govern reward, emotion, and motivation.”[2]
Besides the food itself, packaging is another factor that adds to the already long list of negative effects of processed food. A multicohort study[3] found higher consumption of certain processed and restaurant-prepared foods was associated with higher levels of PFAS—called “forever chemicals”—in the blood. Processed meats such as bacon, hot dogs, and sausages, as well as tea, cakes, and foods bought from fast-food restaurants, were linked to elevated PFAS concentrations, potentially because these chemicals can enter food through processing or grease-resistant packaging.
With this understanding it might not come as a surprise that 1 in 3 children face having a chronic condition (CC) or functional limitation (FL), according to a secondary data analysis published in Academic Pediatrics, based on data collected in the U.S. from the 1999 to 2018. Their findings show that “[t]he prevalence of children (5–17 years) with a CC/FL has risen from 22.57% in 1999/2000 to 30.21% in 2017/2018 – an adjusted annual increase of 0.24% points per year (P < .0001) or about 130,000 additional children per year. The prevalence of young adults (18–25 years) with a CC/FL has risen similarly (adjusted annual increase of 0.33% points per year, P < .0001). Asthma and mental/behavioral health conditions were some of the leading CC and FL (respectively) contributors to this increase for both age groups. We estimate that approximately 1.2 million youth with a CC or FL currently turn 18 each year.”[4]
As we mentioned, it is not just food, supplements have their fair share of creating health problems as well. One of the most deceitful marketing campaigns by the chemical-based supplement companies is to suggest parents to give Flintstones or other toxic vitamins—in the form of gummy bears or other sugary breakfast cereal that reads ‘fortified with vitamins’—as a safeguard for their children’s nutrient shortfalls. Most one-a-day vitamins are made with a chemical base produced from fossil fuel.
If you ever study the label of a B vitamin or multivitamin, you may need to look up some of the terms and be aware of the other toxic additives such as silicon dioxide, which makes vitamins weigh more, and natural flavors (a term often used for MSG) used to mask a poor-tasting supplement. Other toxic ingredients include carnuba wax and titanium dioxide, crospovidone (pulmonary emboli reported in autopsies), sucrose, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, textured vegetable protein, aspartame, all maltodextrins (unless non-GMO), titanium oxide, carrageenan, acrylamides or cupric sulfate among others. If you want to get freaked out, look at the ingredients in Centrum vitamins, one of the top selling vitamin brands, and you will discover that it is toxic. Just because it states it is a vitamin you should not automatically assume that it is good for you. It is tragic that there is no oversight and false claims are allowed to be advertised. The public are deceived because they trust the system has checks and balances in place, but it does not.
Then there are the dyes. Did you know that every year food manufacturers pour 15 million pounds of artificial food dyes into U.S. foods? Canada does the same. That amount only factors in eight different varieties, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). Food dyes, synthesized originally from coal tar and petroleum, have been controversial for a long time. Many of them have been banned because of their adverse effects on laboratory animals.
Not only children are affected by health problems caused by chemical-based supplements, the range of negative effects are quite massive, unfortunately. On one hand they may cause toxicity but they can also be linked to faster Alzheimer’s progression or increased kidney damage in people already affected by these conditions.
According to a study, Hyperglycosylation is a metabolic driver of Alzheimer’s disease[5], glucosamine, a joint supplement, may be worsening cognitive decline in brains that are already affected by mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer’s disease because it contributes to a chemical reaction that often goes into overdrive in Alzheimer’s disease. Similarly, other “over-the-counter medications can increase the risk of kidney damage in patients with chronic kidney disease, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), compound cold medicines, and gastrointestinal medicines.”[6] This is due to the fact that they might either reduce blood flow to the kidneys or increase blood pressure. They may also contain compounds that place further burden to the already damaged kidneys: e.g. supplements made from plant-based ingredients may contain unexpectedly high levels of potassium, phosphorus, sodium or added protein.
There are still quality supplements produced, often times reflexed by price.
